Your site’s menu can technically support up to four nested levels—primary links, secondary submenus, tertiary menus, and even a fourth tier. In practice, however, deeper hierarchies tend to overwhelm visitors.
Best practice:
Limit your navigation to two levels:
- Main links (top-level pages)
- One layer of sublinks (related child pages)
This keeps your menu clear and easy to scan. Plus, your footer sitemap will only display those first two levels, so anything deeper won’t be visible there anyway.
